MATCH REPORT
LEEDS CITY v HULL CITY
AN INTERESTING BENEFIT MATCH
Strong Leeds City and Hull City teams met at Elland Road, Leeds, yesterday, in a "friendly"engagement. The match had been arranged for the benefit of the widow and family of the late Leeds City centre-forward, David Wilson, who died under such tragic circumstasnces a few weeks ago. The match was a distinct success alike in a playing and financial success. It was witnessed by 4,000 spectators, the receipts realising £96 13s. 9d., irrespective of the tickets sold.
Leeds were well represented, although H. Munday, the Chesterfield captain, who had been announced as a probable starter, was an absentee. He was injured on Saturday last and could not make the journey. From the selected side Hargraves deputised Henderson. Hull also had a good, though not a fully representative side.
The game opened with a good strong Hull attack initiated by good work on the part of Howe. In the end Bromage cleared well from a good shot by S. Smith. The first score came as the result of a free-kick against Leeds for "hands". Davies put S. Smith in possession of the ball, and as a result of his smart run Leeds conceded a corner. Neve placed the ball well and though D. Murray and Bromage cleared hot shots which followed, Howe finally sent the ball into the net. Leeds got on terms in about ten minutes. Davis conceded a corner, and a "maul" followed in the goalmouth, Harwood altogether beating Spendliff. After this each goal was attacked in turn, but Hull soon regained the lead. In his effort to clear Bromage conceded a corner, and Neve placing the ball well Howe shot hard, the ball going between D. Murray's legs into the goal. Bromage had not the slightest chance of stopping the ball. Just before half-time a foul inside the dreaded area by one of the Hull backs ended in Freeborough giving Spendliff no chancewith a penalty shot. Thus the interval arrived with the scores two goals each.
The second half was well fought, and a goal was obtained by both sides. A couple of corners to Leedswere the first incidents of note, but neither materialised. Hull then had a promising attack, Freeborough cleverly saving the situation by robbing Gordon of the ball. Leeds came near to scoring two to three minutes later. A corner was well placed by W. Murray, and Watson headed just over the bar. A free-kick to Leeds then had its result in a good shot by Parnell, and Spendliff only cleared with difficulty. Leeds got in front as the result of an excellent movement. Parnell ran well down the right touchline on receiving a neat pass from Watson. He ran down to Spendliff, who checked his hard shot. Harwood was up, however, and he had no difficulty in scoring. The last goal of the match was scored by J. Smith, who easily beat Bromage with a penalty kick awarded against George for "hands" within the penalty area. Each side tried hard to obtain the winning point, but could not, and the match therefore resulted in a draw of three goals each. This result was a fair representation of the run of play.
